There
are many ways of Potty Training Dogs. I found Samson in a rescue center, he was a lovely dog but I did not know anything about him and likewise he knew nothing about me! When we got home I settled him down with a place to sleep in the kitchen with his food and water, the first thing I learnt about him was that he loved his food, no wonder he was so big! An hour later I went into the kitchen and discovered he had eliminated on the kitchen floor, I thought this was a one off but soon realized he had not been potty trained. I had no experience in potty training dogs so I did a ton of research and found most of it biased towards puppies. Here are a few tips I picked up in the research I did for potty training dogs: Restrict your dog to one area of the house where it is easier to clean. Try and get some background information on your dog from the previous owner (not possible in my case). Buy a dog potty with a splash back and post. If you use old newspaper to absorb your dogs pee, then insert a single soiled sheet of newspaper into the fresh stack of newspapers when you are cleaning up the potty. The odor from this will encourage the dog to use the potty again. Encourage him with praise when he uses the potty correctly. I found that it was fairly easy to teach Samson as opposed to a puppy, for one he had stronger bladder control and he responded better to commands but it still took a while, as they say 'patience is a virtue'. During my search for help with potty training dogs I found some great house training information called the ultimate house training guide, it's great for any dog problems you may have. To a better future with your mutt! Victoria
